Few products were marketed with more optimism than Hall's Hair Renewer, a Victorian-era tonic that promised to restore color to graying hair and thickness to thinning locks. Advertised in Southern newspapers from the 1880s through the early 1900s, it was one of the most widely sold patent hair remedies of its day. The gap between its promises and its results may have been considerable — but the advertisements were genuinely spectacular.
