Wrightsville Beach was North Carolina's premier summer resort at the turn of the twentieth century, and the Tarrymore Hotel was one of its grand social anchors. Built to serve the growing tourism trade as rail service opened the beach to visitors from Wilmington and beyond, it offered cool sea breezes and genteel Southern hospitality. A weekend at Wrightsville Beach circa 1905 looked and felt something like this.
