Before germ theory had fully taken hold, patent remedies like Lippman's Pyrafuge were sold as cures for fever and malaria — genuine threats in coastal North Carolina's low-country climate. Made by B.B. Lippman & Co. of Savannah, it was marketed aggressively throughout the South in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The patent medicine era produced some of the most vivid and persuasive newspaper advertising in American history.
