California Fig Syrup — later known to millions as Syrup of Figs — was one of the best-selling patent laxatives of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, appearing in newspapers across the country with cheerful claims of gentle, natural relief. Marketed heavily to mothers for their children, it was a household staple in the era before modern medicine. Few patent medicine brands ran more recognizable, more persistent, or more colorful advertising.
